Did You Hear About Baargaal , About Baargaal

Baargaal is a city of some 10000 people in north-east Somalia. It is a port town located on the Arabian Sea coast in the mountainous region Bari in the de facto independent state of Puntland.

Baargaal was the location of the Baargaal raid in June 2007, when between 12 to 14 heavily armed Islamist fighters arrived in two fishing boats from southern Somalia and clashed with local troops. On June 1, a US Navy warship, the USS Chafee, shelled hills around Bargal where Islamist militants were reported to have set up a base. US reports suggest the target was an al-Qaeda operative suspected of involvement in the 1998 bombings of US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.
