About 50 Somali agricultural and fisheries exhibitors attend the Gulf Food Fair

Close to 50 exhibitors from Somalia are taking part in the ongoing Gulf Food Fair displaying various agricultural and fisheries products.
The fair which opened Sunday and is marking the 25th attracted exhibitors and visitors from all over the world.

Out of the 47 exhibitors from Somalia, the majority are from sesame (15) and banana sectors (14).
The fisheries sector which is among the upcoming economic sectors in Somalia attracted nine exhibitors while those exhibiting raisins and gum are two.

The fair which concludes on February 20 is a platform for exhibitors to interact with potential markets across the world. Critical for Somalia is attracting investments and markets in its agricultural and fisheries sectors which had for many years remained dormant since the outbreak of the civil war in early 1990s.

Somalia restarted exports of bananas to Turkey and Saudi Arabia last year following a collaboration and support from the USAID Growth, Enterprise Employment and Livelihoods (GEEL) programme.
According to the programme, the five days event is expected to attract 5000 exhibitors and 9800 visitors.
The event aims at promoting the foods and beverage industries.
The event also conducts seminars for newly established businesses to gain knowledge from professionals and train under them.
Somalia is attending the event for the fourth year now.
